After twenty-five years working in the Canadian book business, Marnie decided to use her experience and focus her passion for books on content, the authors who produce it, and helping authors get their book into print. In 2014 she established her own small business, Note Editorial and Publishing Services. Since then she has worked with a wide variety of talented and devoted authors and manuscripts from across Canada. She is committed to any author who wants to produce their best work and publish it however they choose.
Marnie was a delight to work with. She demonstrated great passion and initiative and we worked well as a team to strategically target high potential corporate accounts. I have tremendous respect for Marnie’s business capabilities, values and character.
Marnie Ferguson is one of the best book people I have ever had the pleasure to work with – she is extremely well-read, well-organized and able to handle multiple tasks at the same time. Overall – a very talented publishing professional.
Marnie is a tremendously astute and creative publishing professional, a highly gifted strategist, and a natural-born leader, communicator, and team builder. Her breadth of knowledge cuts across all genres and categories, and her keen understanding and analysis of industry trends is impressive.
Marnie started note to pursue her own vision, offering the benefits of her skills and experience to writers navigating their way in the vibrant and changing world of book publishing. Marnie is proud to work with a diverse network of professionals whose goals are the same: to provide professional, personalized, and affordable services to authors and writers, with integrity and with work of the highest standard for our clients.
Marnie has worked closely with publishers, authors, readers and retailers. She has watched with fascination the ebb and flow of the book market; the rise of the eBook and its effects on the business of book publishing; and the globalization of publishing. She has watched the transformation of self-publishing from the murky world of “vanity” publishing into the exciting and successful alternative for writers that it is today.
A native of Winnipeg, Marnie graduated from the University of Manitoba and after working in the oil industry in Calgary and a year of travel, Marnie found her ideal career path when entered the book business as a bookseller at McNally Robinson Booksellers. In 1999, Marnie joined HB Fenn & Company, Canada’s largest Canadian-owned book distributor, which represented dozens of Canadian, American and UK publishers. She subsequently held a number of senior management positions including Product Manager, Director of Sales, and Director of Publishing Services. In 2006, Marnie had the pleasure of working at Key Porter Books as Director of Sales for two years, during a transition period in the life of this venerable publishing house. In 2011, Marnie joined John Wiley & Sons as Corporate Sales Manager. There she worked with a small team of professionals and directly with authors ensuring their books’ success in non-retail markets.
Marnie has been an active participant in her profession: presenter and delegate at industry conferences in Canada and abroad, guest speaker for the publishing program at Humber College, member of an industry panel of experts on the business of publishing, jury member of inaugural Manitoba Book Awards and editorial board member.
Marnie volunteers with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) in the recording studio producing audio books for their clients.
